Order Details Viasat Essentials comes with 150 GB of High-Speed Data and Unlimited Standard Data; after you use 150 GB of High-Speed Data, Viasat may prioritize your data behind other customers during network congestion, which will result in slower speeds. Essentials requires a 24-month minimum service term; if you disconnect before the end of the term, you may be charged an early termination fee of $15 for every month remaining on the contract. Unleashed and Unleashed Max have no minimum service term and may be cancelled at any time without an early termination fee. Unleashed and Unleashed Max include unlimited data; if your data usage trends significantly higher than typical usage, you may have reduced priority during network congestion relative to other customers on your plan. Speeds are “up to,” are not guaranteed and will vary; most customers experience a baseline speed of up to 80 Mbps most of the time. A $15/mo equipment lease fee applies in addition to the monthly service fee. Standard installation is free; non-standard installation work may incur additional costs. Taxes and surcharges may apply. What download speeds does Viasat offer?
Viasat describes speeds as Baseline and Burst. Baseline Speed is what most customers experience most of the time: up to 80 Mbps on every current plan. Burst Speed is the temporary maximum achievable under ideal conditions: up to 150 Mbps on Essentials, up to 180 Mbps on Unleashed and up to 200 Mbps on Unleashed Max. Speeds are up to, not guaranteed, and vary by location.
I have no idea how much data I need. How do I choose a Viasat plan?
Depending on the type of connection available to you, you may have data caps that restrict how much you can stream. Here are the requirements for streaming: The FCC states you need a minimum download speed of 0.7 Mbps for standard streaming videos, 1.5 Mbps for streaming feature movies, and 4Mbps for HD-quality. Amazon Prime Video requires 900 Kbps for Standard Definition (SD) and 3.5 Mbps for High Definition (HD) videos. Netflix recommends 3 Mbps for SD quality, 5 Mbps for HD, and 25 Mbps for Ultra HD. Hulu’s minimum SD and HD internet speed requirements are 1.5Mbps for SD, 3 Mbps for 720p HD, 6 Mbps for 1080p HD, and 13 Mbps for 4k Ultra HD.
What is Viasat Unleashed Max?
Unleashed Max is the new top tier Viasat launched on 08-Oct-2026. It includes unlimited High-Speed Data with priority network access, which means Unleashed Max customers are placed ahead of Essentials and Unleashed customers when the network is busiest. It also includes the EasyCare protection plan at no extra charge (a $9.99/mo value), has no annual contract, and is priced at $109.99/mo for the first 12 months and $179.99/mo thereafter.
Will my Viasat service work with a wireless router?
Yes. You can use your own, or get the new Viasat WiFi Modem with built-in Wi-Fi when you order Viasat Internet.If you don’t have the Viasat WiFi Modem or would prefer to use a different router, any modern router will work with Viasat. A wireless router will allow you to create a home network with your Viasat service. This will let you share the service wirelessly with your computer and other devices, such as tablets and smart phones.
Can I use VoIP (internet phone) on the Viasat service?
Yes. In fact, we offer Viasat Voice, which is optimized specifically for our network and includes unlimited local and long-distance calling in the U.S. and Canada.Other VoIP services usually work fine with Viasat, but you’ll likely see better results with Viasat Voice. Plus, with Viasat Voice, calls don’t count toward your data allowance as they would with other VoIP services.
What's the installation process like?
A certified professional technician installs equipment and activates the Viasat Internet service at your chosen location. Standard installation is free on every current plan. The satellite mini-dish is about 30 inches wide x 28 inches high and can be easily mounted on a roof, outside wall or in the ground. A cable from the dish connects to the modem which connects to your computer via a short cable. Installations typically take 2-3 hours.
Is there an equipment fee?
Yes. A $15/mo equipment lease fee applies to every Viasat plan, in addition to the monthly service price. Taxes and surcharges may also apply.
Will my Homeowners Association allow the Viasat dish?
The Viasat dish is governed by the FCC Over-the-Air Reception Devices Rule. This means it has the same classification as other residential dishes – such as satellite television dishes – and can be mounted on your home. However, you should still check with your landlord or HOA for specific rules and covenants that may prevent or limit dish installations.
Are there any cancellation fees?
It depends on your plan. Viasat Unleashed and Unleashed Max have no annual contract and no minimum service term, so there is no early termination fee. Viasat Essentials requires a 24-month minimum service term; if you disconnect before the end of it, you may be charged an early termination fee of $15 for every month remaining on the contract. For example, cancelling after 10 months of a 24-month term leaves 14 months x $15 = an early termination fee of $210.
What about latency?
The reason older versions of satellite Internet service were slow had more to do with the technology available at the time than latency. Viasat incorporates groundbreaking web acceleration technology, which dramatically speeds up page-load times, minimizing the effect of latency.
