Frequently asked questions
Does Cox (Spectrum) throttle Internet speed?
Cox (Spectrum) never throttles Internet speeds. No blocking or otherwise interfere with your desire to go where you want to go on the Internet. Cox (Spectrum) has always been committed to providing customers a quality, high-speed Internet experience. Bandwidth throttling can interfere with the download speed, upload speed and overall performance of your network’s Internet service.
Can I use my own modem?
Yes. A modem is included with Cox (Spectrum) internet at no extra charge, but you can use your own compatible modem instead — Gig speeds need a Gig-capable model. See Spectrum.net/modem for the current list. Your speeds are the same whether you use the included modem or your own.
Does Cox (Spectrum) provide DSL or fiber internet?
Cox (Spectrum) internet is fiber-powered: the network is built on fiber and connected to your home over existing lines, so performance does not drop off with distance from an exchange the way DSL does, and speeds run up to 2 Gig where available.
Why does the speed of the Internet plan say "Up to XXMbps?"
Two things matter as it relates to the speed of your Internet connection: the download speed and the upload speed. Download is the speed at which your computer receives data from the Internet. In general, when you request a webpage, you pass a very small amount of data to the web called a request and the web page and all of the assets are downloaded to your computer. Upload is the speed at which your computer sends data to the Internet (or cloud). This is mostly relevant when you are uploading pictures or videos from your computer to someplace on the Internet. Generally, upload speeds are slower than download speeds as more customers have the need for downloading information from the Internet, like loading web pages, streaming videos, etc. Download and upload speeds are both measured in megabits per second (Mbps).

What is Advanced WiFi?
Advanced WiFi is Cox (Spectrum)’s whole-home Wi-Fi router with built-in security features and app-based controls for every device on your network. It is included with Internet 1 Gig and available as an add-on on other plans; WiFi Pods extend coverage to dead zones.
Does Cox (Spectrum) offer cheap internet plans?
Internet 500 at $40/mo for 1 year is the entry plan on this page, with no annual contract and no data caps. Lower-speed offers may be available at your address — ask on the call and we will check what is serviceable.
What is wifi?
Wifi and Internet are 2 different things. Wifi is an alternative to cables connecting devices. Wifi gives you wireless access to the internet from anywhere in your home via a modem, which translates the signal from Cox (Spectrum). The router distributes your internet connection through your home so all of your devices can communicate with each other and the internet.
