Apple’s September event usually follows a script: a new number on the box, a slightly better camera, a slightly bigger battery, and a keynote that runs ten minutes too long. This year, Apple tore up the script. On 09-Sep-2026, in his first launch as CEO, John Ternus walked on stage without a standard iPhone 18 at all. Instead, Apple gave the Pro line its biggest internal overhaul in years and then pulled the sheet off something it has never sold before: a folding iPhone, called the iPhone Duo.
So what actually changed compared with last year’s iPhone 17 Pro? Which of these phones is worth your money? And, because this is Homelinkd, where should you buy one so that the sticker price is not the price you actually pay? Let’s get into it.
The One-Paragraph Version
Three new iPhones: the iPhone 18 Pro (from $1,199), the iPhone 18 Pro Max (from $1,299), and the foldable iPhone Duo (from $1,999). The Pros look almost identical to last year’s models on the outside but get a 2-nanometer A20 Pro chip, a variable-aperture main camera, noticeably longer battery life, faster charging, and a $100 price bump. The Duo is the headline: a passport-sized book-fold with a 5.4-inch cover screen and a 7.6-inch inner screen, Touch ID instead of Face ID, and a launch date in October. The regular iPhone 18 is not coming until spring 2027, and the rest of the current lineup just got $100 more expensive.
What’s New in the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max
If you put an iPhone 18 Pro next to an iPhone 17 Pro with the screens off, you would struggle to tell them apart. Same 6.3- and 6.9-inch sizes, same footprint, same camera plateau across the back. The 18 Pro is a few grams heavier (211g vs. 206g; the Max goes from 233g to 249g), and that is about it for the exterior. Every meaningful change is inside.
The camera finally gets an aperture ring
This is the feature Apple spent the most stage time on, and deservedly so. The 48MP Fusion main camera on the 17 Pro shot everything at a fixed ƒ/1.78. The 18 Pro’s main camera has a true variable aperture with six laser-cut blades that range from ƒ/1.48 to ƒ/4. In auto mode, the phone picks the opening based on light and depth. In the new Pro controls, you can set it yourself, along with shutter speed and white balance, and watch a live histogram while you do it.
Why does that matter if you are not a photographer? Two reasons. Wide open at ƒ/1.48, the lens gathers more light than any previous iPhone, which Apple says translates into roughly 50 percent better low-light performance. Stopped down to ƒ/4, you get the kind of edge-to-edge sharpness in group shots and landscapes that the 17 Pro could only fake with software. Cinematic mode video also jumps from 4K at 30fps to 4K at 60fps in Dolby Vision, and the front camera picks up Photographic Styles 3 with texture and grain controls.
A20 Pro: the 2nm chip that runs cooler, longer
The A19 Pro in last year’s phone was built on a 3nm process. The A20 Pro moves to 2nm, and the gains are the kind you feel over an afternoon rather than in a benchmark screenshot. The GPU grows from six cores to seven and is up to 40 percent faster. The Neural Engine doubles to a pair of 16-core blocks (32 cores total) to carry the new Siri AI features in iOS 27. Memory bandwidth is up 50 percent.
The bit Apple is quietly proudest of is thermal. The 17 Pro introduced a vapor chamber; the 18 Pro’s version has three times the surface area, and the chip is packaged so that the silicon sits directly against it. Apple’s claim is up to 40 percent higher sustained performance, which is the difference between a game that stays smooth for an hour and one that throttles after fifteen minutes.
Battery and charging: the quiet headline
Here is where the year-over-year gap is widest. Apple rates the iPhone 18 Pro at up to 36 hours of video playback, up from 33 on the 17 Pro. The Pro Max jumps from 39 hours to 45, the longest Apple has ever quoted for an iPhone. Part of that is the 2nm chip; part is the new Apple-designed C2 modem, which replaces the Qualcomm X80 in the 17 Pro and uses about 15 percent less energy than Apple’s own C1X while adding mmWave 5G support in the US.
Charging is faster too. The 17 Pro reached 50 percent in about 20 minutes on a 40W charger. The 18 Pro does it in about 15 minutes at 60W, and MagSafe moves to 35W for a 50 percent top-up in half an hour. On the Pro Max, Apple says five minutes plugged in buys you roughly seven hours of video.
Smaller Dynamic Island, new colors, same body
The Dynamic Island shrinks and now shows three Live Activities at once instead of two, so a timer, a ride and a game score can all sit up top together. Face ID is unchanged. The N1 wireless chip brings Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and Thread for smart-home gear. The colors are the most visible change: last year’s Silver, Deep Blue and Cosmic Orange give way to Black, Silver, Glacier (a pale, icy blue) and Burgundy.
Prices: up $100 across the board
Storage still starts at 256GB and now tops out at 2TB, but every tier costs $100 more than its iPhone 17 Pro equivalent. Apple also raised the standard iPhone 17, iPhone Air and iPhone 17e by $100 each after the event, so this is a lineup-wide reset rather than a Pro tax.

iPhone Duo: Apple’s First Foldable
Ternus called the Duo “the most transformational change to iPhone since the original,” which is the kind of line CEOs say at keynotes. In this case the hardware mostly backs it up. Closed, the Duo is about the size of a passport, with a 5.4-inch cover display that Apple says gives you about 90 percent of an iPhone 18 Pro’s screen area. Open it like a book and you get a 7.6-inch inner display, the largest ever on an iPhone and around 50 percent bigger than the 18 Pro Max.
Both screens are Super Retina XDR with ProMotion, Always-On, and 3,000 nits of peak outdoor brightness. The inner panel gets a nano-texture finish plus a micro-lens layer, written pixel by pixel with maskless laser lithography, that Apple says makes the crease effectively disappear to the eye. The frame and hinge cover are Grade 5 titanium, the hinge has more than 100 parts and a magnet array to snap shut, and the whole thing is IP68 rated. Open, Apple says it is the thinnest iPhone ever made.
The essentials
- Chip and modem: the same A20 Pro and C2 modem as the 18 Pro. eSIM only, worldwide.
- Cameras: a 48MP Fusion main camera with integrated 2x optical telephoto, a 48MP ultra-wide that doubles as a macro lens, a 12MP Center Stage camera on the cover, and a FaceTime camera hidden beneath the inner display. Video up to 4K at 120fps in Dolby Vision.
- Battery: two cells, one in each half. Up to 31 hours of video on the inner screen, 44 hours on the cover screen, or about 24 hours of mixed use. 50 percent charge in roughly 20 minutes.
- Security: Touch ID in the side button rather than Face ID, plus Apple Watch unlock.
- Colors and price: Star White or Night Sky. $1,999 for 256GB, $2,199 for 512GB, $2,599 for 1TB, $3,199 for 2TB.

Who it’s for
The Duo is a first-generation product at a first-generation price, and Apple has not tried to hide that. If you read on your phone, split your screen between two apps all day, or have been eyeing a Galaxy Z Fold from across the aisle, this is the phone the rest of the industry has been waiting for Apple to make. If you mostly text, scroll and take photos, the 18 Pro does all of that for $800 less, with a better main camera and Face ID. Our honest advice: unless you already know you want a foldable, let the Duo ship in October, read the reviews, and revisit.
What Happened to the Rest of the Lineup
There is no iPhone 18 this year. Apple has split its release calendar, with the standard iPhone 18 now expected in spring 2027. The iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max are gone from Apple’s store, replaced by the 18 Pros. The iPhone 17 ($899, up from $799), iPhone Air ($1,099, up from $999) and iPhone 17e ($699, up from $599) stay on sale, all $100 dearer than they were the week before the event. Apple also introduced the Apple Watch Series 12 and AirPods 5, and iOS 27 arrives as a free update on 14-Sep-2026 with the first beta of the new personal-context Siri.

Coming from an iPhone 17 Pro? Sit tight. The design, screens and everyday camera experience carry over almost untouched, and you would be paying $100 more for a chip and a battery you will not notice most days. The exceptions are people who shoot a lot of low-light or manual photos, or who genuinely run their phone flat every afternoon. For them the aperture and the extra hours are real.
Coming from an iPhone 15 Pro or older? This is a big jump, and probably the one to make. You get last year’s redesign and vapor chamber, this year’s chip and camera, and battery life that is in a different league from a two- or three-year-old phone.
Pro or Pro Max? The Max costs $100 more and, this year, earns it. Nine extra hours of rated video playback is the largest gap Apple has ever put between the two sizes.
Where to Buy: Why AT&T Usually Wins on the Real Price
Here is the part of every iPhone launch that gets less attention than the camera and matters more to your bank account. Apple sells the 18 Pro for $1,199. Almost nobody who buys one on a carrier plan actually pays that.
For this launch, Apple’s own store lists up to $1,200 in trade-in credit on the iPhone 18 Pro through AT&T, paid as monthly bill credits over a 36-month, 0% APR installment plan. The credit tiers are $1,200, $930 or $350 depending on the phone you hand in and the unlimited plan you are on, and the top tier accepts eligible trade-ins in any condition, cracked screens included. Both new lines and upgrades on existing lines qualify, which is the detail that usually separates AT&T from the competition: you do not have to switch carriers or add a line to get the good number.
That is why we generally point people to AT&T first. A few more reasons:
- The math favors it. A $1,200 credit on a $1,199 phone means the 18 Pro can effectively be covered by your trade-in over the term of the plan.
- One bill, one discount. If you have or want AT&T Fiber at home, an eligible AT&T unlimited plan unlocks a bundle discount on your internet, so the new phone can lower your home internet bill too.
- Coverage and stores. AT&T’s nationwide 5G network now includes mmWave support on the 18 Pro’s C2 modem, and there is a store or a phone line to call in virtually every market.
The fine print you should know: taxes on the full retail price are charged upfront, there is a $35 activation or upgrade fee, and the line must stay active for the full 36 months or the remaining credits stop. No carrier, AT&T included, had published an iPhone Duo offer as of 10-Sep-2026; the Duo does not ship until 23-Oct-2026, so expect those closer to launch.
