Citrus County’s multi-year rural broadband buildout is nearing the finish line. Spectrum announced in late August that its internet, mobile, TV and voice services are now available to more than 8,000 homes and small businesses across the county, marking a major milestone as the network expansion nears completion.
Part of a $7 billion rural construction push
The Citrus County work is part of Spectrum’s multi-year rural construction initiative, driven by more than $7 billion in private investment. Nationally the program is adding more than 100,000 miles of fiber-optic network infrastructure and is set to deliver symmetrical and multi-gigabit speed internet access to more than 1.7 million new locations. Similar Florida builds have already brought service milestones to Marion, Pasco, Seminole and Osceola counties.
Private construction like this is running alongside — not instead of — Florida’s public programs. The state’s Broadband Opportunity Program has previously funded dozens of rural projects across more than 30 counties, and FloridaCommerce’s Office of Broadband is distributing the state’s separate $1.16 billion federal BEAD allocation through competitive grant cycles. For most rural addresses, whichever build arrives first is the one that matters.
A digital education grant alongside the build
On 21-Aug-2026, at Citrus High School’s football stadium, Spectrum presented a $15,000 Beyond the Build Digital Education grant to United Way of Citrus County, aimed at digital access and education programs for local students and families.
What this means if you live in Florida
If your Citrus County address had no cable or fiber option the last time you checked, that has likely changed — the new passings are live and orderable, with speeds up to 1 Gig on the new footprint. This is also a useful reminder for rural addresses elsewhere in the state: buildouts like this one move county by county, so availability results from even a year ago can be stale. Where wired service still has not arrived, T-Mobile home internet and Starlink remain the practical stopgaps.
