How do I choose an internet provider?
Choosing an internet provider can be a daunting task for many. But we have the tools to help. First, think of what you want most out of your provider —is speed and price most important to you, or does your data plan need to be unlimited? Now that you have an idea of what you’re looking for, find the providers available in your area and compare their plans to what suits your needs.
What you need to consider when choosing an internet provider
- Make sure your internet line speed is fast enough to accommodate your lifestyle. Not sure what speed you need? Read more: What internet speed do you need?
- If you sign up for a contract, you will be liable for early termination fees (ETFs) should you decide to cancel your contract early. Consider whether a contract plan is ideal for you. If not, we recommend going month-to-month.
- An internet provider should not just offer great deals, but excellent customer service as well. A good customer service team will make your experience with the provider much more enjoyable.
Questions to think about when choosing an internet provider
Choosing an internet provider is just as big a decision as choosing your next car –there are many factors to consider before you’re confident enough to say “yes”. Here’s a list of questions to ask yourself when choosing an internet provider:
- What will my connection speed be? Having an idea of what internet line speed is right for you is a major factor. Those who work from home or game online regularly would require a fast, reliable connection.
- How much data do I get? If you use the internet mainly for browsing or checking your emails, you may not need a large data plan – decreasing the cost of your plan. But if you stream regularly, game online or run a business from your home, consider an unlimited data plan.
- What’s the monthly cost and minimum total cost? This depends on the type of plan and contract you take with the provider. Signing up for a longer-term contract could result in a discount on installation fees and hardware. Check out our deals here.

Fiber
Fiber offers incredibly fast connections, with symmetrical upload and download speeds. While the top choice for many users, fiber is only available in limited areas at the moment due to the infrastructure needed.
Cable
Fast and widely available, cable is available through most providers – delivering download speeds of up to 1000Mbps. Cable works through a shared connection within your neighborhood, so you may experience a slower connection when there is a lot of network congestion.
DSL
DSL is widely available and works through your existing phone lines. In some cases, this is one of the least expensive options, but speed is limited to around 100Mbps.
4G LTE or 5G
A relatively new technology, this connection uses a wireless signal transmitted from a nearby cellular tower to connect your home. Speeds are high, and providers offer this connection at affordable prices. However, availability of this connection is limited.
Satellite
Satellite offers lower speeds than DSL, but it is widely available – even in rural locations. Connection is delivered to your home via a satellite service.

How do you decide the order providers appear in?
Alphabetically, by name. Table position is never sold, and the referral fees we earn have no effect on where a provider appears or on which plans we show. Our full content and ranking policy is on the How We Rank page.
Is it cheaper to order direct from the provider, or through a comparison service?
You pay the provider’s own advertised price either way — we do not add a markup, and comparing or ordering through us is free. We are paid a referral fee by the provider when you order. The practical advantage of going through us is that we can check several providers at your address in one call instead of you filling in forms on each provider’s site to discover which ones can even reach you.
Why might a price here differ from the provider’s own website?
Because provider pricing is local and promotional. The figure we show is the cheapest qualifying residential plan we hold on file for that provider, and a provider’s own site may quote a different promotion for your specific address, a different term, or a price that excludes equipment. Where we cannot state a reliable figure we ask you to call rather than guessing. Always confirm the final price with the provider at the point of order.
What do the connection types in the table mean?
Fiber runs light down a glass line and is usually symmetrical, so upload matches download. Cable uses the coaxial TV network — fast down, slower up, very widely available. DSL uses telephone lines and is slower, but often the only wired option where fiber has not been built. Satellite works almost anywhere and is the practical choice in rural areas without wired service. 5G home and fixed wireless run over a wireless network instead of a line to the house, so they are usually self-install and contract-free, with performance depending on signal.
