The State of Broadband

Scoring high in comparison with many other states, Florida has the 5th-best broadband access ranking in the U.S. While some Florida counties have relatively low high-speed coverage, most counties experience over 95% coverage. Florida’s average download speeds are estimated at around 167.8 Mbps, which is faster than some other, higher-ranking states.

The Digital Divide

Impressively, 96.8% of Floridians have access to wired broadband, with speeds of 25 Mbps upwards. Remarkably, just under 500,000 people in the state are still without a wired connection capable of these high speeds. Although Florida has over 220 internet providers, there are still 1 million people in Florida with access to only one wired provider.

Best-Connected Cities

In Florida, Bradenton, Boca Raton, Hollywood, Lake Worth, and Pompano Beach are ranked amongst the best for broadband connectivity in the state.

Worst-Connected Cities

The five most poorly connected cities in the state of Florida are Indian Lake Estates, Wacissa, Suwannee, Horseshoe Beach, and Mc Intosh, with Indian Lake Estate ranking worst.

Governmental Initiatives

Since 2010, almost $8.9 million in federal grant funding has gone to the Florida Department of Management Services to pay for broadband development and data collection. An additional sum of $55,902,591 in federal grants has gone toward broadband infrastructure projects in Florida.
