Internet statistics for San Diego

San Diego is home to some of the best internet providers in the country, as well as being one of the most connected cities. The average internet speed in San Diego is around 188.85 Mbps – that's about 5 times faster than the national average!

When it comes to the type of connection, fiber optic internet is currently available to just over 33% of households, although not as available as the other connection types, it is still one of the more popular choices in San Diego. Cable is next with 97% coverage, followed by DSL at 96%. Satellite internet is also available but only has a 1% market share.

Several of the ISPs operating in the San Diego market offer bundle services, where you can add your home phone service, TV services or voice bundles to your current internet plan at a discounted price. Bundles help you save time, money, and give you the convenience of having everything on one bill.

AT&T Internet, AT&T Fiber and Xfinity are some of the most popular internet providers in San Diego, as well as other areas of California. However, there are many others to choose from and with so many different plans and speeds available, it can be hard to decide which is the best fit for you.

The best internet providers in San Diego

Now that we've looked at some of the key statistics, let's take a closer look at each of the individual providers and what they offer in the San Diego area.

1. Comcast Xfinity - Best internet service provider overall

Comcast Xfinity is one of the largest internet service providers (ISPs) in the United States. They offer a wide variety of plans, with speeds ranging from 15 Mbps all the way up to 2,000 Mbps in some areas.

Xfinity also has a number of extras that come with their plans, such as access to over 18 million WiFi hotspots, Norton Security Suite, parental controls and even no data caps.

2. AT&T - Fastest internet service provider

AT&T is one of the oldest and most well-known telecommunications companies in the world. They offer a wide range of services, including internet, TV and home phone.

AT&T's internet plans offers speeds of up to 100 Mbps. However, their fiber optic plans are much faster, with speeds of up to 5,000 Mbps available in some areas. AT&T also doesn't have any data caps on their plans.

One downside of AT&T is that they don't offer any extra bundling discounts if you sign up for multiple services, so it's important to consider what you need before signing up.

3. Cox Communications - Wide availability

Cox Communications is one of the largest private telecommunications companies in the United States. They offer a wide range of services, including internet, TV and home phone.

Cox plans offer speeds of up to 100 Mbps. However, their fastest plans offer fiber speeds of up to 940 Mbps in some areas. Cox also offers discounts if you bundle your internet service with TV or home phone and most Cox plans come with no data caps.

4. Spectrum - Best for internet bundles

Spectrum is a large telecommunications company that offers a range of services through cable or fiber internet, but it is not really available in downtown San Diego or surrounding neighborhoods - as that territory belongs mainly to Cox.

Spectrum plans offer speeds of up to 300 Mbps but you can find internet plans with speeds of up to 1,000 Mbps at a higher price. Spectrum also offers some great discounts if you bundle your internet service with your TV or home phone.

When you sign up for their one-year contract, you won't have to worry about data caps, overage fees or throttling if you exceed your data limit.

5. Earthlink - Cheapest internet deals

Earthlink is one of the oldest internet service providers, dating back to 1994. They offer a wide range of services, including internet, web hosting and VoIP through cable internet.

Earthlink's cheapest internet plan offers speeds of up to 100 Mbps, and plans can go up to 940 Mbps per month. Earthlink also has a number of extras that come with their plans, such as free cloud storage and a security suite.

EarthLink offers unlimited data, fiber where available, and no speed throttling, but most plans do not come with discounted rates, and you will have to sign up for a one-year contract as well.

6. Google Fiber - Best for customer service

Google Fiber is a newer internet service provider that offers some of the fastest speeds in the market. Their top speed plans offer up to 2,000 Mbps in some areas.

Google Fiber also doesn't have any data caps on their plans and offers excellent customer service.

However, Google Fiber is only available in select neighborhoods, not all areas of San Diego.

Internet coverage: How to find high-speed internet in your area

If you're looking for high-speed internet in your area, the best way to find it is to use an internet speed test. There are a number of websites that offer these tests, and they will show you the highest possible speeds available in your area.

You can also check with your local telecommunications companies to see what plans they offer. Most companies will have a website that you can use to check availability and compare plans.
